Writing & Reading

I write for work and pleasure. Most of my creative writing falls into the genre of literary fiction, with inspirations ranging from paperback detective novels to the works of the Oulipo. I haven’t had much luck getting things published, but I’m working on it. I’ve also written various articles and essays, a series of vegan cooking zines, and some poetry that I still can’t decide whether I think is good or not. Professionally, I’ve written any number of analytical and persuasive texts as a copywriter, diplomat, and communications manager.

Here are some of the writing projects I’ve been working on:

Untitled Mexico Project (work in progress)
An autobiographical novel based on two years’ worth of visa interviews in Mexico during my time as a diplomat with the Department of State.
Døve menn går i Fjærland
(work in progress)

An atmospheric crime novel featuring a pair of accidental detectives and a small-town mystery set amidst Norway’s western fjords.
Kjære Skjære
(2019, unpublished) Norwegian-language children’s book in verse: the story of a curious little magpie who leaves their farm for the big city, and a practice text for the kj/sj sound pair.
Census: Stories
(2010, self-published)
Oulipo-inspired story series written weekly over the course of 2009, one for each U.S. state, based on census data. Two were published by Electric Literature.
Mighty Fine
(2009, thesis project)

A post-modern semi-memoir of loss and transformation, drawing on my service in an army band during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Awarded various prizes.
I Was a Teenage Vegan Cookbook, Volumes 1-3 (2000s, self-published)
A hand-lettered and illustrated series of vegan cooking & baking zines, plus some posts on a now-defunct blog.
PDFs available online.
Various Poems
(1990s-present)

Unpublished collections, plus uncollected and unfinished poems that I start as phrases or images come to me. Read a couple here.
Assorted Short Works
(2000-present)

A few essays and creative non-fiction pieces, published by Amerikansk Politikk, FO(A)RM, The Army Times, ESSL Museum.
Songwriting
(1998-present)
I have written the lyrics for several of my music projects, which often relate to the causes I care about and ideas I’m interested in.
Professional Writing
Website text, video scripts, marketing materials, persuasive speeches, analytical reports, diplomatic cables, and more.
Writing Tutor
I worked at the Wesleyan Writing Workshop, helping students improve their work (including a final lecture on what not to do).

I co-organize the Oslo Book Club, facilitating discussions on the books and stories we read each month.
